Firehouse.com: Full 9/11 Coverage

Less than 30 percent of the $2.3 billion donated to major Sept. 11 charities has gone to victims' families while 40 percent has yet to be distributed, according to a survey by The Washington Post. Roughly 20 percent has gone to displaced workers and others affected by the attacks.

The paper reported on its Web site last night that families of the 343 dead firefighters have received an average of $1 million each - 10 times the amount that has typically gone to the families of others killed in the attacks.

The American Red Cross has about $400 million left to distribute, which the organization has pledged to spend by Sept. 11, 2002. The September 11th Fund, the second-largest of the 9/11 charities, plans to distribute its remaining $180 million over many years to meet long-term needs.
