PINE BUSH, N.Y. (AP) -- A former New York City firefighter was charged with stealing personal items from the World Trade Center site while he volunteered in the recovery effort, police said.
Samuel Brandon, 60, of Pine Bush, faces a felony charge of tampering with evidence.
Port Authority Police Detective Lt. William Hanley said Brandon ``felt these items would be of value.''
Authorities learned of the thefts after a potential home buyer toured Brandon's home, and Brandon mentioned that he had personal effects from the World Trade Center site, Hanley said.
State police were notified, and an undercover investigator went to his home, where Brandon showed him a crushed police or fire department radio, Hanley said. Police also recovered a wedding photo and photo IDs from employees of Cantor Fitzgerald and the Port Authority.
Brandon was jailed pending his arraignment.
