New York's Bravest were honored yesterday as they demonstrated the techniques they use every day to earn their title.
Hundreds of New Yorkers and out-of-state firefighters boarded the Intrepid to watch simulated rescues, learn about fire safety and watch a spectacular water show put on by a fireboat.
Among the firefighters taking part were members of Engine Co. 40 and Ladder Co. 35, which share the same Upper West Side firehouse and lost a total of 11 men at the World Trade Center.
"It seems now that people look at us a little differently," said Lt. James Earl of Ladder 35. "They really appreciate us."
In addition to demonstrating techniques for rescuing people trapped in car wrecks and on high floors of buildings - the firefighters showed off another talent.
Several FDNY members who cut a CD called "We'll Carry On" gave a performance on the dock.
Kennie Wells, whose husband is a firefighter in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., came with T-shirts from her husband's firehouse, which she exchanged with some FDNYers at the event.
Since 9/11, she explained, "We're connected to New York."
