Hundreds Attend Services for Syracuse Firefighter

Story Updated: Monday, January 25, 1999 – 3 am

By Captain Mark McLees
Syracuse FD Rescue 1

(FHnews) - Hundreds of firefighters from all over the northeast converged on Syracuse for the funeral of fallen firefighter/investigator Jim McGroarty on Friday.

McGroarty was killed Tuesday, January 19 when a chimney fell on him as he assisted insurance investigators at the scene of a fire.

Tremendous support was given by the community in welcoming the visitors to a reception held at the New York State fairgrounds International Building. It was appropriate as Firefighter McGroarty had spent countless years at the annual New York State Fair at a restaurant owned/operated by his family.

For the many wishing to send notes or cards or contributions, please note the following. A trust fund has been established for Jim's 14 year old daughter Katie.

The address is as follows:
Katie McGroarty Fund
c/o Syracuse Fire Dept. Employees Federal Credit Union
PO Box 791
Syracuse, N.Y. 13201
