Story Updated: Wed, April 7, 1999 – 4 pm

CRANSTON, Ky. -- Two volunteer firefighters were killed Tuesday afternoon as they battled a major wind-swept brush fire in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Kenneth Nickell, 28, and Kevin Smith, 30, were fighting one of 27 wildfires reported Tuesday in Kentucky. Both men were volunteers at the Cranston Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department. They are each survived by a wife and children.

Witnesses said the two men were overtaken by flames when the wind shifted. They died of smoke inhalation.

The fire burned 60 acres before being brought under control Wednesday.
