Oct. 8--CAJON PASS -- After spending days dealing with the Sheep Fire, two San Bernardino County firefighters on their way home to the Victor Valley on Wednesday morning put out two spot fires in the Cajon Pass using a metal trash can lid and bottled water, authorities said.
Fire Engineer Jay Hausman and Ryan Beckers were relieved of their duties as information officers at the Sheep Fire and were heading home when they noticed two spot fires just south of Oak Hill Road along the right side of northbound Interstate 15. The two did not see any engines responding to the fire and decided to try to put out the blazes themselves, despite not having any equipment with them.
As Beckers called for assistance, Hausman used a flattened, metal trash can lid he found on the side of the road to shovel dirt onto one of the fires estimated to be about six square feet.
"That's all I had as far as equipment," Hausman stated.
The two men then worked together to put out the other spot blaze.
"By the time our closest engine would 've gotten there, the fires could've easily have grown to one-half to 1 acre," Hausman said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the U.S. Forest Service.
