July 24--Five St. Paul firefighters suffered heat exhaustion Friday morning while trying to control a blaze at a vacant two-story building in the Summit-University neighborhood.
Four were hospitalized at Regions Hospital and the fifth was treated at the scene, the Fire Department reported.
Crews responded to the fire at 327 Fisk St. shortly before 9:30 a.m. and found the building, owned by a local VFW post, full of dense smoke. After searching for people and finding none, they tried to control the fire, which had already spread into the walls and ceilings.
According to the department, fighting a fire in walls and ceilings "is extremely difficult and labor-intensive."
The building sustained "significant" fire, heat and smoke damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building had no fire sprinklers.
The injured firefighters are expected to recover, the department said.
