MONROE, N.C.
--
Fire investigators are trying to determine what led to a blaze in a motel room where a man was found dead.
Firefighters were called to the Knights Inn off U.S. 74 in Monroe around 4:30 a.m. Thursday. The fire was contained to room 617, where firefighters found the body of the room's only occupant.
Officials have not released the man's name. His body has been sent for an autopsy to determine how he died.
Monroe Police Chief Debra Duncan said it appears the fire started near the mattress so the fire was likely accidental.
Eyewitness News will have more information as it becomes available.
