MAY 1: LYNCHBURG, VA – A train carrying crude oil derailed and led to the evacuation of nearby buildings and drinking water was drawn from an old canal system instead as a precaution.

MAY 2: BELLA VISTA, AR – Authorities closed lanes in both directions to assist fire crews in transferring water to the scene of an overnight fire at a lumber company. 

MAY 3: LOS ANGELES, CA – An overnight fire in a North Hollywood pallet yard quickly spread and destroyed an adjacent homeless shelter, displacing 21 residents. It took 137 firefighters 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze. One fire captain was injured.

MAY 27: FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA – Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the third floor of the four-story building upon arrival. The fire quickly spread to the fourth floor, attic and roof. The four-alarm blaze led to the death of a female resident and caused injuries to six firefighters. Several people were rescued. Approximately 160 firefighters responded to the scene, including units from Fort Belvoir and Prince William County.

MAY 28: LAS VEGAS, NV – A two-alarm fire in a vacant downtown apartment building led to the displacement of eight people.
