The Duxbury, MA, Fire Department used all-wheel-drive brush breakers to navigate through tidal-flooded streets to reach a three-alarm fire in a detached garage.

DUXBURY, MA, DEC. 23—All-wheel-drive brush breakers were the only Duxbury Fire Department attack apparatus that initially were capable of navigating narrow, tidal-flooded streets to reach a three-alarm fire in a detached garage in the midst of a winter storm. Wind challenged the operation, but the fire was brought under control before it spread to numerous houses only a few yards away.

ELDRED TOWNSHIP, PA, JAN. 27—A four-alarm fire destroyed American Legion Post 887 despite the efforts of more than 100 firefighters from at least 21 departments. Numerous tankers were used in a tanker shuttle. Additionally, one 5-inch hydrant supply line and three 5-inch supply lines were used from nearby drafting sites in ponds and streams. The building’s metal roof hampered firefighting operations. The last units left the scene 10 hours after the fire was discovered.

BUCKHANNON, WV, JAN. 5—The Adrian Volunteer Fire Department, the Banks District Fire Department, the Buckhannon Fire Department and Upshur County EMS responded to a fire in a rural area just outside of Buckhannon. The fire had overtaken the house on arrival, but the garage was spared. Six apparatus were on scene. This area has been hampered by the downward trend in volunteer firefighter numbers. Nevertheless, no civilian or fire injuries were reported.

SAN DIEGO, DEC. 25—In the early hours of Christmas morning, members of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were called to a reported structure fire. E21 was first on scene of a well-involved, three-story apartment building that was under construction. The fire extended into two exposures, and the embers that were cast set multiple palm trees in the area on fire.
