IL Grocery Store Evacuated after Heating Unit Overheats

Rockford Fire Department responded shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday for a report of a ceiling fire at the Schnucks grocery store.

Rockford, IL — Rockford Fire Department responded shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday for a report of a ceiling fire at the Schnucks grocery store on 11th Street. 

Firefighters confirmed that a heating unit had overheated and emitted an odor that concerned store employees, who called 911. 

The store was temporarily evacuated while firefighters checked the heating unit inside the store and on the roof. 

Rockford Fire Department Lt. James Graham said the call for help and the fire department's response was out of an abundance of caution. 

Customers were allowed back inside after several minutes. There were no injuries reported. The store's manager declined to comment.
