Former FF Dies in NY House Fire

Dec. 10, 2018
Larry Connolly, 74, had been a lifetime member of the volunteer fire department in Coxsackie.

A former Coxsackie, NY, firefighter died in fire in his home Saturday night.

Heat and smoke drove back fire crews who tried to rescue Larry Connolly, 74, the Albany Times-Union reports. The fire had trapped Connolly, a lifetime member of D.M. Hamilton Steamer Company, the village's volunteer fire department, on the third floor of the house.

Firefighters were able to save Connolly's wife, who was unhurt from the blaze. She was found in a stairwell between the second and third floors of the house.

"I have spoken to the departed member's wife this morning. She is uninjured and extends her thanks to everyone who worked so hard and long at the scene (Saturday) night," Coxsackie Mayor Mark Evans wrote in a Facebook post Sunday. "We also appreciate the many condolences expressed from our surrounding departments. It is never easy to lose a resident and especially a brother firefighter."

Fire investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze, the Times-Union reports.
