A San Bernardino County firefighter was hospitalized for burns and two others were treated at the scene for their injuries during the two-alarm blaze in Hesperia.

Three California firefighters were hurt tackling a two-alarm blaze that broke out at an old sheriff's station Tuesday.

Crews from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to reports of smoke coming from the county's vacant sheriff's station in Hesperia just after 12:30 p.m., the department said in a statement posted to social media. When firefighters arrived at the scene, heavy flames could be seen bursting through the boarded-up station's roof.

Firefighters' initial attack on the fire was pushed back when the roof collapsed toward the front of the building. A second alarm eventually was requested because of fire's size and "complexity of the incident caused by the layout of the building," the fire department said.

One firefighter suffered burns battling the blaze and was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Two other firefighters were treated at the scene for injuries related to heat illness, according to the department.

By about 3 p.m., 34 firefighters were able to knock down the bulk of the blaze, and crews remained on the scene past 6:30 p.m. for an extended overhaul that involved demolishing the station, the department said. Besides the firefighters, no one else was injured, and the fire is under investigation.
