Minquas Fire Company Capt. David Smiley Jr. suffered burns on about 10 percent of his body after falling through the floor during the fire Thursday in Milltown.

A Delaware firefighter was seriously injured when he fell through the floor battling a house fire Thursday morning.

Minquas Fire Company Capt. David Smiley Jr. suffered second- and third-degree burns on about 10 percent of his body, the firefighter's father stated in an online post. He was taken to Crozier Chester Medical Center, where he's in critical condition, The News Journal in Wilmington reports.

According to the Minquas Fire Company, crews responded to a call after 8:30 a.m. of a fire at a home in Milltown. While fighting the fire, Smiley fell through the floor of the house when it collapsed, Smiley's father said.

"His burns are on his ankles, hands, neck, ears, stomach and back," Dave Smiley Sr. wrote. "He is currently intubated and medicated to keep him comfortable until he can have his airway assessed. David is in for a long road of recovery. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers."

Firefighters from other departments also responded to the blaze, according to The News Journal. No one was home when the fire broke out, and a cat was saved, the publication added.

The fire has been rule accidental and was caused by a malfunctioning dryer on the house's first floor, The News Journal reports.
