April 6, 2019
A Fall River firefighter was taken to the hospital because of injuries he suffered while battling Saturday's blaze, which killed an 87-year-old man who lived in the building.

One person died in an early morning fire in Fall River, and one firefighter is being treated for injuries.

Firefighters responded Saturday morning to a fire on Palmer Street and found someone dead, said Jennifer Mieth, spokesperson for the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Mieth said she didn’t know anything about the fire victim except that it was an adult.

Multiple reports say the fire victim was an 87-year-old man who lived alone on the second floor. WHDH reported that the neighbor who lives downstairs came home and smelled smoke, prompting the neighbor to call 9-1-1.

A firefighter was injured when responding to the fatal fire, according to the union, Local 1314. The union didn’t elaborate on the nature of the injuries, but firefighter is expected to be OK.

Investigators are still at the scene working on determining the cause of the fire.
