Explosion from 4-Alarm Fire Destroys NC House

At least one person suffered life-threatening injuries in an incident at a home at a Charlotte country club that had more than 80 firefighters responding Tuesday.

At least one person was critically injured when an explosion from a four-alarm fire leveled a home in North Carolina on Tuesday.

More than 80 firefighters responded to the incident at about 2 p.m. at the Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, the Charlotte Observer reports. A cloud of thick, black smoke filled the air around the scene, and the massive explosion shook nearby homes.

Dispatchers received a call from a man with life-threatening injuries who had been trapped in the house that was caught in the explosion and fire. Once he was rescued by crews, the man was airlifted to a local hospital, according to the Observer.

Firefighters spent the late afternoon scouring the home's wreckage for possible survivors, and at least two people in neighboring homes were hurt.Those nearby residences also sustained extensive damage in the incident.

Details on what started the fire or caused the explosion have not been released.
