A family of four and a dog escaped a fire in Salina on Tuesday night after their smoke detectors woke them up, according to Liverpool Fire Chief Jerry Payne.

While the family got out of their house safe, the home at 4876 Thornwood Drive was deemed a total loss, Payne said.

As the fire smoldered, the garage appeared to have burned down to just a skeleton frame. A car inside the garage caught fire and had burned through. Even two cars outside the garage had partially burned.

Firefighters were dispatched to Thornwood Drive at 10:48 p.m., according to Onondaga County dispatch logs.

When firefighters arrived, they found two adults and two children outside the home as flames shot 30 feet up from the house, Payne said.

Live wires had fallen in the driveway, according to Payne, preventing firefighters from immediately working to extinguish the fire.

During the fire, a propane tank attached to a grill in the garage also caught fire and exploded, according to Payne.

The fire had to be fought from outside the house initially, Payne said.

The family has been displaced by the fire and will be aided by the Red Cross.
