Exhaustion Sends MA Firefighters to Hospital

Crews from multiple fire departments battled the intense two-alarm house blaze in Yarmouth early Sunday.

SOUTH YARMOUTH, MA—Two firefighters were treated for exhaustion after an intense house fire early Sunday on Mayflower Terrace, according to the fire department. The firefighters were treated and released at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. The occupants of the house were outside when the fire department arrived.

Yarmouth firefighters received the call at 4 a.m. for a fire at 80 Mayflower Terrace, a one-story ranch with three bedrooms. Dennis firefighters came to the scene too. After trying to fight the fire from inside, the decision was made to move all the firefighters out of the house and douse the fire from outside.

The attic had a plywood floor and limited access, so firefighters had a hard time extinguishing the fire there, leading to a second alarm being struck to call more firefighters to the property. Crews from Hyannis, Harwich and Brewster came to the property to help, while other fire crews went to the three Yarmouth fire stations to cover for any other calls.

The fire department described the house as severely damaged. An investigation is underway but the cause is not considered suspicious.
