Firefighters Suffer Minor Injuries in 3-Alarm NH Blaze

A resident was treated at the scene for minor burns, and Nashau crews rescued a cat during a large house fire Sunday.

NASHUA, NHOfficials say two firefighters were injured and one cat rescued during a three-alarm fire at a residence on Pike Street in Nashua on Sunday afternoon.

According to Nashua Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Kerrigan, firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a home at 76 Pike Street around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Upon arrival we had heavy fire showing,” said Kerrigan.

Kerrigan said a second alarm was immediately struck to bring additional manpower to the scene, and once firefighters determined the fire had stretched to the attic of the home as well as the rear of the dwelling, a third alarm was struck.

The building is set far back from the nearby road, which Kerrigan said made it difficult to get ladder trucks to the site.

“We had a lot of access problems,” said Kerrigan. “The distance from the road posed a challenge in terms of getting a ladder truck in. There were tough conditions; the heat took a lot out of us.”

The bulk of the fire was knocked down at 5:38 p.m. Fire crews remained at the scene as of 7:45 p.m.

Kerrigan said two firefighters were treated for minor injuries. One suffered back and neck injuries, the other was treated for heat exhaustion.

One resident was home at the time of the fire and suffered minor burns and was treated at the scene. One cat was rescued from the home, Kerrigan said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Nashua fire marshal’s office, Kerrigan said. No monetary damage estimates were available Sunday night, and Kerrigan said he was unsure how many people live at the address.
