An Alpena firefighter needed foot surgery after he was injured when part of a wall fell on him while battling a blaze at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore building.

ALPENA, MIA pair of firefighters battling a fire at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore building were injured at the scene, but are expected to recover despite the building being a total loss. According to True North Radio, one of the firefighters was injured when a portion of a wall inside the building collapsed on him. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he required surgery on his foot.

The other injured firefighter suffered a medical emergency while on scene, but according to Alpena fire chief Bill Forbush, both men are home and “doing well.”

Firefighters were called to the scene around 6:15 a.m. Sunday when a passerby noticed the building was on fire. Crews battled the fire for several hours before getting it under control and eventually extinguished the fire around 6:30 p.m.

The store, located at 400 W. Chisholm Street, was completely destroyed by the fire. An investigation remains underway, but Forbush said the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
