Piles of Cars Catch Fire at CT Junkyard

One firefighter suffered a minor injury battling a blaze that involved burning stacks of vehicles and scrap metal at Chuck and Eddie’s junkyard in New Haven.

NEW HAVEN, CT—Several vehicles caught fire Thursday afternoon at Chuck and Eddie’s junkyard.

The fire broke out just before 1 p.m. at 190 Middletown Ave.

Emergency Management Director Rick Fontana said the fire was reported at approximately 12:45 p.m. and brought under control, although not extinguished, by 2:40 p.m.

He said scrap metal and cars were on fire. Firefighters were battling the blaze using handheld streams of water and elevated streams of water, Fontana said. One firefighter suffered a minor injury, Fontana said.

Thick, black smoke could be seen for miles and nearby Interstate 91.

Chuck and Eddie’s sells used and new auto parts and has been in operation since the 1940s.
