Saginaw fire crews discovered the body after extinguishing a "small fire" inside the building.

SAGINAW, MI — Police are investigating after a body was discovered in an early morning fire on Saginaw’s East Side.

At 1:06 a.m. on Monday, April 29, firefighters responded to 2716 S. Jefferson Ave. for a report of smoke emanating from the building, said Saginaw Fire Chief Brandon Hausbeck. The building houses K&D Market on its first floor and apartments on its upper story, Hausbeck said.

Crews entered the building and found a small fire inside, which they quickly extinguished. Firefighters found a body while searching the building and notified police, Hausbeck said.

The chief declined to say on which floor the body was found. He also declined to disclose the sex or age of the decedent, deferring those matters to police.

As of 8:30 a.m. Monday, police had Jefferson Avenue between Hess and Gallagher cordoned off to traffic. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the area across from the Pinewood Manor apartment complex.

Contacted by MLive, Saginaw Police Chief Robert M. Ruth said he was awaiting updates from investigators at the scene before he could provide more details.
