Six people also were hospitalized from the accident that happened when a tractor-trailer failed to stop after traffic became backed up at an intersection in Bel Air.

Two people, including a 7-year-old boy, were killed Monday in a 12-car accident in northeast Maryland.

Firefighters and police from around the state responded to the crash at about 7 a.m. along Route 24 in Bel Air, WJZ-TV reports. Six people also were hospitalized in the incident.

According to authorities, a tractor-trailer traveling south near Ring Factory Road slammed into several vehicles after failing to stop when traffic became backed up. The truck, which was carrying cargo from a grocery store chain, then stopped in the intersection, pinning two cars beneath it and catching fire.

"Exactly why that tractor-trailer failed to stop at that time, is still under investigation," a Maryland State Police spokesman told WJZ.

Tripp Johnson, 7, of Joppa, and Andrew Klein, 65, of Forest Hill, died in the accident. The people who were hurt in the crash ranged in age from 30 to 57 and were taken to local hospitals, according to the TV station.
