A firefighter was taken to the hospital battling a fatal two-alarm fire early Monday in New Jersey.

The blaze, which broke out just before 1:30 a.m. at a home West Deptford, killed a 75-year-old woman, KYW-TV reports. Jacqueline Truss, the widow of a retired West Deptford Township police officer, was found by crews in the kitchen of the burning home.

"My guys arrived on scene first, and it was completely engulfed in fire," West Deptford Township Police Chief Sean McKenna told the TV station, adding that the fire appeared to have started in the back corner of the house. "It is a very sad feeling when you know you cannot get inside the house."

The hospitalized firefighter suffered from breathing issues but was expected to recover. The blaze's cause is being investigated, according to KYW.
