An off-duty Oregon firefighter helped a homeowner trying to put out a fire at his residence Friday.

Portland firefighter Maggie Blackwood noticed the blaze at about noon as she was walking by the house in North Portland, next to the area's Kenton City Park, KOIN-TV reports. When Blackwood saw the homeowner trying to douse the flames with a garden hose, she began pitching in and making sure they were both safe.

“She came on the scene and was working to get the homeowner to come away from the fire,” firefighter Damon Simmons told KOIN. “She said, ‘I’ll take over here, you need to move away from the fire.’ But before she could get him fully away from the fire, the homeowner was burned a little bit.”

Officials determined the blaze had started in the kitchen. No one was seriously hurt in the incident.

"It’s just a part of who we are. Any opportunity that we get to help people, we are going to take advantage of it and we are going to get in there and do what we can to keep people safe," Simmons told KOIN.
