NY Firefighter Hospitalized after Ladder Fall

Dec. 16, 2019
"He just appeared out of the smoke and fell to the ground," a Rochester fire official said about the firefighter who was injured while battling a Sunday night house blaze.

A New York firefighter was injured after a fall from a ladder while battling a house blaze Sunday night.

The fire broke out at about 7:30 p.m. at a house in Rochester, WROC-TV reports. Crews noticed heavy smoke and flames coming from the home as they approached the scene, and the homeowner was able to escape the blaze.

The firefighter was injured while trying to climb into the house through the second floor. Although he didn't lose consciousness, he was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

"There was so much smoke, and he was trying to make entrance into the second story of the house and something happened, it was hard to see," Deputy Fire Chief David Kaltenbach told WHAM-TV. "He just appeared out of the smoke and fell to the ground. … No obvious breaks, but he is definitely hurting."

Kallenbach added that the firefighter's injuries from the fall could have been worse if Sunday night's cold temperatures had frozen the ground.
