Long Island, NY, Man Saves Firefighter From Burning Home

The neighbor climbed a ladder to a second-floor window to rescue the teen, trapped in his burning house.

A Long Island man saved his neighbor -- a firefighter -- from a house fire in Sayville.

"I just could see the smoke coming out of the house. I said, 'Oh my god, call 911, the house is on fire,'" Richard Mosback told a CBS reporter.

"I started yelling to see if anyone was inside. And then I came out because the smoke was so overwhelming," he said.

That's when Mosback saw his neighbor, Andrew Spitzfaden, trapped and leaning out a second-floor window.

He ran back to his yard and grabbed a ladder. A contractor ran to hold it as Mosback climbed to reach the young man. a firefigher.

Spitzfaden, 18, was grateful.

"I never even met him before, but he came. He definitely saved my life."

The ordeal didn't seem to faze the young firefighter. "I went to three calls right after...because I love the fire department so much."

The family dog didn't make it out.

Spitzfaden and his parents went to Mosback's home Thursday to thank him.

Neighbors have donated tens of thousands of dollars to help the family with expenses as the house was destroyed.
