Two people are dead and a third is injured following a fire at a multi-family home in Connecticut on Wednesday.

The fire broke out Wednesday evening at a home on Geneva Avenue in Wallingford, where crews responded after receiving a 911 call from someone who reported hearing screaming from inside the home, according to the Wallingford Fire Department.

Crews quickly located one victim who was taken to an area hospital, Dep. Fire Chief Samuel Wilson told news reporters late Wednesday.

Wilson said crews battled heavy black smoke and heat while searching for victims.

At least two people were taken to the hospital, including a victim who had to be airlifted via LifeStar.

Fire officials said two people were killed during the blaze and a third was injured.

It was not immediately clear how many people resided in the house or how many were home when the blaze broke out.

The American Red Cross is assisting those who were displaced.

The cause of the fire in under investigation.
