Coopers Plains, NY Firefighters Rescue Pilot from Plane

On June 23, 2003 at 15:14 the East Campbell and Coopers Plains Fire Departments were dispatched to a report of a hang glider caught in power lines.

On June 23, at 15:14 the East Campbell and Coopers Plains Fire Departments were dispatched to a report of a hang glider caught in power lines.

One engine from East Campbell responded along with a light rescue truck and the First Responder squad from Coopers Plains.

The first unit on the scene reported a sailplane caught in telephone cables approximately 15 feet off the ground.

Captain Rob Ellison, incident commander, called for the aid of a bucket loader from nearby Hakes Construction to stabilize the aircraft.

Ground ladders were used to reach the pilot. The pilot had some minor injuries and was transported to Corning Hospital by Rural Metro Ambulance.

The canopy had to be cut away because it was damaged by the impact.
