Wilmington, Delaware Firefighters Respond to Blaze

On June 5, 2003, Fire Department units were dispatched to the above location after dispatchers received several calls for a Building Fire.

On June 5, 2003, Fire Department units were dispatched to the above location after dispatchers received several calls for a Building Fire. First arriving unit was Deputy Chief Joseph Kalinowski who reported Heavy Smoke from the second and third floors of a three story, brick, apartment over commercial building. The first floor was occupied by a Beauty Salon. There was one apartment located on the second floor and one apartment located on the third floor. The third floor was unoccupied at the time of the fire but there was one person at home on the second floor. That person and the people in the beauty salon escaped unharmed. Fire Suppression units located the fire in the apartment on the second floor, and extinguished same. There was heavy fire damage to that apartment and heavy smoke damage to the apartment on the third floor. The beauty salon suffered minor smoke damage and minor water damage. The fire was fought by 26 firefighters and was placed under control at 1622 hours.

There was a detection system in the building and it did operate. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

The fire is under investigation by the Wilmington Fire Department Fire Marshal
