An accident on State Road A1A at about 4:45 pm on Saturday, May 8 left three vehicles heavily damaged, sent five people to a local hospital and a sixth to a trauma center by helicopter.

Firefighters from St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded to SR A1A at the intersection of Minnie Blvd., just steps from Station 6, to find that two of the three vehicles involved had collided head-on in the northbound lane.

The third vehicle, a pickup truck with heavy front-end damage, came to rest on the southbound shoulder and the driver appeared to be uninjured. The accident occurred when the pickup collided with the back of a Chevy Tahoe traveling south, pushing it into the northbound lane and into the path of an Infinity SUV.

The driver of the Infinity was unable to avoid the Tahoe and the two vehicles collided head-on. The driver of the Infinity was airlifted from the scene by Trauma One air transport while her passenger and the four people in the Tahoe were all transported by ground ambulance to a Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine.

Along with units from St. Johns County Fire Rescue, St. Johns County Sheriffs Officers and Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene. FHP was investigating the accident and charges were pending against the driver of the pickup truck.
