The City of Northfield Fire Department was dispatched to the Mainland Medical Center at 1750 Zion Road at 4 p.m. on Dec. 18 for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and encountered light smoke and upon further investigation discovered a working fire in a ground floor office. Chief Hank Martinelli requested assistance from the City of Pleasantville and a FAST team from the City of Somers Point.

Firefighters continued to pull ceilings and thought the fire was under control when suddenly heavy black smoke erupted from the building. The Somers Point crew from Engine 47 laddered the building and proceeded to the roof where they made a saw cut, from which fire erupted from. Additional mutual aid was brought in from Egg Harbor Twp. for Cardiff's tower, Farmington's air unit, an Engine from Bargaintown for cover up, along with an Engine from the City of Margate for cover up.

The Atlantic County Field Comm and CBRNE unit were called in as the building contained pharmaceuticals, x-ray equipment, and other unknowns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries were reported.
