Crews found a single vehicle cut in half by a tree

On Sunday, Sept. 5 at 5:50 p.m., City of Suffolk Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a single vehicle accident on U.S. Route 58.

Battalion 1 (Captain T. Thomasson acting) arrived on scene and advised of a single vehicle collision, into a tree, with major damage. Battalion 1 established command. Engine 1, Ladder 3 and Medic 3 arrived just after Battalion 1.

Upon investigation crews found a single vehicle, cut in half by a tree, and 2 victims that were ejected from the vehicle. 1 victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was in serious condition. Command requested Nightingale Air Ambulance to the scene. Engine 2 was then dispatched and assigned to L.Z.

While Medic 3 was treating the second patient, crews from E-1 and L-3 began searching the area for a possible third victim. Crews also scanned the area with a thermal imaging camera, but all attempts came up empty. It was then learned that there was not a third patient.

Nightingale transported the second victim to Trauma 1 Center, Sentara Norfolk General. At last check he was in critical condition.

Suffolk Police Department and Virginia State Police are investigating the accident; speed is believed to be a factor.
