Photo Story: Trench Cut Made at Conn. Condo Blaze

July 23, 2014
Almost all of Waterbury's fire resources were called to battle a fire in a condo building on July 7.

An ambulance crew spotted a late morning fire at a Waterbury condominium complex on July 7.

Waterbury firefighters were dispatched to a kitchen fire with smoke showing after a Campion ambulance crew radioed the call in. Engines 2, 4, 5, Trucks 2, 3, Rescue Engine 1, Battalion 2 and Car 5 were dispatched.

Battalion 2 reported heavy fire showing from the second floor extending to the third floor in the middle unit of a three-story condominium building.

First-due firefighters pulled handlines and made an aggressive attack on the fire along with doing primary searches and venting the roof.

Battalion 2 requested an additional engine company for rapid intervention, which brought Engine 11. A short time later he had another engine dispatched to the scene and Engine 7 was sent. As the incident escalated, Engine 6 and Truck 1 were called to the scene for manpower.

Waterbury had only one engine left in the city which was relocated to downtown. Mutual aid was called in from Wolcott for an engine to cover the Northside firehouse and Watertown Engine 1 to the Bunker Hill Avenue station while Naugatuck Truck 1 also covered.

The firefighters made a trench cut in the roof to vent the smoke and the fire was knocked down in a half hour.

The residents of the unit were displaced due to the fire, which is under investigation by the fire marshal.
