Flames spread to the attic of the Whitakers homes and crews were forced to withdraw for a defensive attack.

Several fire departments battled a house fire in Whitakers on Nov. 20.

A 911 caller reported smoke and flames coming from a home on Moore Farm Road. Fire crews from Whitakers, Batteboro, Leggett and Enfield were dispatched.

First-in unit from Whitakers arrived to find heavy fire showing from the roof of a brick ranch home. Firefighters make an interior attack with two 1 3/4-inch hoselines and conducted searches.

The fire engulfed the attic and crews were then evacuated.

Drop tanks were set up and tankers had to travel over a mile to fill up.

Three additional handlines were put into operation and the Enfield ladder truck was set up for master stream operations.

The fire was placed under control after an hour.
