Training & Tactics Talk: Fourth Dimension of Firefighter Survival

March 9, 2011

Host Douglas Cline talks with Capt. Brian Giles with the Lincoln, NE, Fire Department about Giles' bringing martial arts training into firefighting. Capt. Giles is a 21 year-veteran of public safety, including police and fire, and a 26-year students of martial arts.

Giles relates how the practice of "Zanshin," or "a state of total awareness; preparedness for danger; readiness for action," can relate to the preparation of firefighter survival, situation awareness and Mayday training.

The two discuss the mental and physical preparations for firefighter survival and how any firefighter can apply Zanshin to their training tool kit to prepare them for day-to-day incidents.
