NORTHBROOK, Ill., August 15, 2011 – Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a world leader in advancing safety, today announced it will once again host the Chicago White Sox's Annual "Fire & Police Night" on Wednesday, August 17, when the White Sox play the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field. UL has sponsored the event, which pays respect to the thousands of Chicago fire and police professionals for their commitment to protecting the community, since 2008.
"UL is honored to have the opportunity to once again team with the Chicago White Sox to host this special night that pays tribute to local heroes in our community – the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect others, as fire fighters, police officers and first responders,” said Chris Hasbrook, vice president and general manager of UL's global building materials and life safety & security industries. "UL has a long history of working with first responders worldwide; conducting groundbreaking fire & safety research, testing & certifying the equipment used while on the job, providing training courses for firefighters and advancing consumer safety through public education efforts. Representatives from UL will be on hand before and during the game providing fans with important safety literature. Radio Disney will be broadcasting live from the game, promoting an "I Am Safety Smart" theme, and all fans will be encouraged to "commit a minute to safety" by visiting www.safetyathome.com where they can find articles and tips to help keep them and their families safe at home.
During a pregame ceremony, Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Huff will recognize Chicago Fire Fighter Jason Durbin with the Carter Harrison Award in honor of his courageous actions in December 2009 that resulted in him saving the life of a woman trapped on the 28th floor of a burning building.
Police Sergeant Jason Kaczynski and Police Officer Kimberly Thorp will also be recognized by Chicago Police Commander Eric Carter in recognition of their actions in apprehending a suspect while coming under fire. Also during this ceremony UL will announce donations to select fire and police charities on behalf of UL and in the names of Durbin, Kacyznski and Thorp.
Durbin and Kacyznski will throw out ceremonial first pitches before the White Sox take on the Cleveland Indians, which begins at 7:10 p.m.
