April 6, 2010 Appleton, Wis. – Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) Company and North America's leading fire and rescue apparatus manufacturer, today announced the sale of its 400th Pierce Ultimate Configuration (PUC) vehicle. This PUC was ordered by Volusia County Fire Services, which is located on Florida's Atlantic coast.  It is the first PUC ordered by this department and will join more than 40 other Pierce apparatus in the department's fleet.

"The PUC is among the most successful products in Pierce Manufacturing history, and Volusia County's purchase of PUC number 400 is monumental for us," said Wilson Jones, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. " This is a celebration of an important milestone as we continue to share stories and facilitate conversations among the firefighting community. The Pierce website's PUC section features great stories about how and why the PUC is changing the way departments configure their apparatus.”

The PUC is an industry-changing multi-purpose response vehicle that is engineered to eliminate the need for a bulky pumphouse. The PUC features a simplified two-step pump shift operation and redesigned pump panel for easier use. The entire pump system is located above the frame for easier and quicker service and maintenance. With a wheelbase for improved maneuverability (as short as 172-inches), the PUC also provides up to 500 cubic-feet of storage. The PUC is available on all Pierce custom chassis in side and top mount configurations, as well as on 75-foot aluminum aerial ladders and custom Contender vehicles.  For more information visit www.piercemfg.com/PUC-Stories

“We believe the PUC's engineering and mechanical design are state-of-the-art, and it offers our department excellent access to components for easier maintenance,” said Dennis Futch, Lieutenant, Volusia County Fire Services. “The vehicle's excellent compartment space design and easy operation will help us perform more productively.”
Volusia County Fire Services has been a customer of local Pierce dealer, Ten-8 Fire Equipment Inc. of Bradenton, Fla., for more than 20 years.
