IAFC Appoints National Wildland Fire Coordinator

Fairfax, Va. – The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) has named Will G. May Jr. as its new national wildland fire coordinator to represent the IAFC and the local fire service on the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) executive board, beginning February 24.

In this role, Chief May—along with the National Association of State Foresters representative—will be the local government voice on the NWCG board, representing all local governments and local fire departments with wildland-fire responsibilities in the United States and its territories.

Chief May brings a long history of successful leadership to his new role:

• Served over 19 years with the Alachua County (Fla.) Fire Rescue Department as fire chief and emergency-services director, retired January 2010

• Served 15 years with the City of Gainesville (Fla.) Fire Department

• Member of the IAFC’s Wildland Fire Policy Committee since 2003, vice chair 2009-2012

• Represented the IAFC on the NWCG Wildland/Urban Interface Mitigation Committee since 2005, chair 2008-2012

• Served on the IAFC’s Technology Council since 2008, chair 2010-2012

• Member of the IAFC’s Recognition of Prior Learning Development Team since 2007

• Member of the Florida Fire Chief’s Association (FFCA) since 1986, FFCA board of directors 1998-2005, president 2003-2004

• Retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief warrant officer after 28 years

• Graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program

About the National Wildfire Coordinating Group

The NWCG was formed in 1974 as a federal interagency team to provide national leadership and establish, maintain and communicate policy, standards, guidelines and qualifications for wildland-fire program management, and to support the National Incident Management System.

The NWCG is an interagency system representing the federal, state and local wildland and wildfire management agencies, including the USDA Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the Fish & Wildlife Service, the U.S. Fire Administration, the National Association of State Foresters, the Intertribal Timber Council and now the IAFC.
