In partnership with the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), Vision 20/20 has developed a free, five-part training program focusing on Community Risk Reduction (CRR) as a way to assist fire departments in developing safer communities.

The course presents the basic elements necessary to prepare a station-based CRR plan. It provides knowledge and motivation for implementing community risk reduction practices, and serves as an easy to access resource for fire departments across the country.

The course covers the process of identifying fire and life safety risks in communities and developing coordinated strategies between operations and prevention that improve public and fire fighter safety.

Vision 20/20 and IFSTA have also partnered to host a series of free online learning modules to improve program evaluation measurements for fire prevention programs, including public education, plan review, code enforcement, and investigations. These same evaluation tools also apply to other injury prevention and mitigation programs.

The course familiarizes students with four evaluation measures: • Formative evaluation is associated with problem identification and the early program development stage of a prevention planning process. • Process evaluation is related to program planning and implementation stages. • Impact evaluation measures educational gain or risk reducing behaviors. • Outcome evaluation methods are related to changes or reductions in deaths, injuries or property loss.

“Both of these courses provide much-needed resources for the nation’s fire departments,” said Vision 20/20 Project Manager Jim Crawford. “By partnering with IFSTA, we are able to make them widely available to help departments implement effective CRR programs in their communities. We appreciate the support from the Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant program in underwriting this project.”

Mike Wieder, IFSTA executive director, said; “IFSTA is excited to host these courses so the fire service and prevention advocates can access this excellent training at no cost to the individual or to their organization. ResourceOne is the IFSTA learning management system and we are very pleased to host these two courses in partnership with Vision 20/20.”
