KME Gets Big Order From Horry County, S.C.

KME announces that Horry County Fire Rescue, South Carolina has awarded KME and Safe Industries an order for 10 custom pumpers, an elliptical tanker, a 109-foot rear-mount ladder and a 102-foot platform aerial, one of the biggest orders in the fire service for 2014.

KME is pleased to announce that Horry County Fire Rescue, South Carolina has awarded KME and Safe Industries an order for 10 custom pumpers, an elliptical tanker, a 109-foot rear-mount ladder and a 102-foot platform aerial. The award, one of the largest in the fire service in 2014, is part of a multi-year contract that will eventually lead to an entire fleet replacement.

The custom pumpers include a Hale SafeBuy pump module, 1000/20 gallon water/foam tanks, 8,000-watt generator, a custom body designed for the County’s unique requirements, and an extensive list of equipment.

The tanker includes a Mack chassis and a 3,300 gallon elliptical tank. The KME 109-foot AerialCat includes a 750-pound tip load ladder and a 14-foot jack spread and the 102-foot Platform offers a spacious 1,000-pound load platform and the fire service’s strongest aerial device.

Horry County Fire Rescue is a combination career members tasked with fire suppression and all hazards response to the unincorporated areas of Horry County and emergency medical care for the entire county. Horry County covers over 1,134 square miles, making it the largest county east of the Mississippi. Staffing for the department consists of over 320 full-time career staff and over 300 volunteers and operates 39 stations.

KME was chosen following an extensive evaluation process of seven fire apparatus manufacturers that submitted proposals. The evaluation committee consisted of 12 members of the fire department including both volunteer and career, along with Fire Chief, Fredrick Crosby.

The committee members, after carefully evaluating the proposals, determined that KME would best be able to meet the needs of Horry County Fire Rescue. According to Chief Crosby, “We look forward to continuing our relationship now and in the future with KME to provide quality fire apparatus that will serve and protect the citizens we serve for years to come. Also we would like to thank the members of Horry County Council and members of the community for their support and service without which we would not have been able to move forward.”
