Africa Fire Mission (AFM) is a non-profit organization founded by firefighters in the Greater Cincinnati area, that has as its goal to better train and equip the firefighters in Africa to meet the challenges of 21st century firefighting.
Currently, AFM volunteers from across the United States are working with Fire Brigades throughout Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi and Zambia to distribute surplus firefighting gear and to train fire brigades in those regions to a higher level of firefighter safety and community risk reduction.
AFM’s holds a country-wide one-week Fire Academy, hosted in a central location that is easily assessable by representatives of that country’s fire brigades. In 2017, this country-wide train-the-trainer concept is already scheduled for both Zambia and Kenya. But equally as important, AFM fosters a firefighter to firefighter partnership that spans international borders while helping these fire brigades better protect the lives of millions of men, women and children from the threat of fire. AFM is looking for willing trainers to be a part of our 2017 missions.
In 2016, Africa Fire Mission was named Firehouse Magazine’s winner of their Community Service Award as part of the magazine’s annual Valor and Community Service Awards Program. Africa Fire Mission was also featured in the October issue of Firehouse Magazine and as the overall award winner, was presented with a contribution from Firehouse to the AFM to continue its future work on the African continent.
