Ohio FFs Treated for Chem. Exposure

CINCINNATI

Fire crews are trying to clean up a chemical spill at a local plant.

Battalion commanders said sulfur dioxide leaked out at the Cylinder Processors Inc. plant at 1409 Grandin Road in Hamilton Township at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters said workers at the Kings Mill commerce park in Mainville thought they saw smoke coming from the plant and called 911.

Villages, cities and counties across Ohio are laying off employees and reducing services to make ends meet.

The Athens County village of Jacksonville, population 560, took the unusual step of rolling a firetruck out of the station and returning it to the dealer.

No longer able to afford the $17,000 annual lease-purchase price, village officials recently returned the keys to a 2001 firetruck.

Mar. 13--GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A Milan man was charged with failure to control Friday morning after the Ferrellgas truck he was driving overturned on Ohio 61.

Kenneth A. Munns, 29, of 58 Cherry St., was heading south about 9:30 a.m. when he went off the right side of the road and overcorrected, said Trooper Rebecca Wellner, of the state Highway Patrol.

The gas truck overturned on the road before continuing off the left side.

Mar. 12--The roof on the recently condemned Norton fire station on Greenwich Road came crashing down Thursday.

Authorities say they think it happened around 2 p.m., although no one was there when it happened.

"It fell in this time," fire Chief Mike Schultz said. "The [roof on the] west side of the building completely collapsed. The entire roof is now in the EMS bays."

The building was vacated Feb.

Toledo Officials: Layoffs Inevitable

Many of the 300 Toledo employees who will get layoff notices on Monday probably will lose their jobs, some on City Council predicted Friday.

"I don't see how we can have a balanced budget without layoffs," Councilman Joe McNamara said.

The city is grappling with a $48 million general fund shortfall for the year and some councilmen already have pledged to vote against parts of Mayor Mike Bell's budget-balancing plan.

Dad Held in Ohio Fire that Killed Boys

GREENFIELD, Ohio

Thomas Coonrod would have celebrated his 4th birthday Sunday.

Instead, his family is mourning the Highland County boy and his 3-year-old brother, Stephen.

The boys were killed in a fire that started about 12:30 a.m. at their home at 150 A Lafayette St. in Greenfield, according to a spokesman for the Ohio state fire marshal.

Their father, 42-year-old Wesley Coonrod, was taken into custody early Sunday on child endangerment charges and remains jailed at the Highland County Jail.

Mar. 5--Nearly a dozen Portage County fire departments battled a blaze early this morning at a storage facility that houses a combustible mix of plastic pallets and other items in Ravenna.

Kent Fire Chief Jim Williams was injured when he was struck in the face by a large nozzle attached to a deluge gun -- a water cannon -- Ravenna Fire Chief Geoffrey Cleveland said this morning.

Williams was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Information on his condition was not immediately known.

Feb. 27--Even with Toledo on the edge of financial ruin -- with the threat of fiscal emergency on the horizon -- the bureaucracy cannot be undone and it keeps cranking out the checks.

Among the payouts next week will be $1.5 million in checks to police officers cashing out a portion of their unused sick days, overtime not paid last year that had been deferred until now and will be paid as compensatory time, and bonus pay for working up to 10 holidays.

Two Injured in Jump From Ohio Fire

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio

Two people were hospitalized Tuesday night when they jumped from a window on the second floor of a burning house on Lin Cris drive near St. Clairsville.

The Cumberland Trail volunteer fire department initially responded, but quickly called for additional help from Barton and Wolfhurst firefighters because crews said the building was too dangerous for firefighters to enter.
