An electrical malfunction in a garage attic sparked a house fire early yesterday that killed a Hilliard woman, her 28-year-old son and another son's girlfriend.
Flames spread quickly through the home at 5119 Bigelow Dr. in Hilliard, neighbors said. Norwich Township fire officials said the split-level house was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived shortly before 4 a.m.
The firefighters at Station 16 were taking a break when the alarm sounded just before 11 p.m.
The basement fire on Robert Street was the ninth call for the men on a snowy Saturday in February. Lt. Mike Polaski, the officer in charge that day, climbed into his usual passenger seat of the fire engine for the 1-mile ride.
When the crews arrived at the one-story house, they saw smoke, but the family was safely outside.

The city plans to hire eight firefighters to replace some retirees -- and to protect federal funds that just returned 37 laid-off rookies to the job.
