Mar. 17--WALLA WALLA -- A house fire Tuesday morning was likely caused by a pet, officials said today.

Firefighters from the city of Walla Walla and Fire District 4 responded about 11 a.m. to a single-family stucco home at 429 S. Second Ave., said city fire Capt. Greg Van Donge.

Three engines responded and the fire was quickly contained to a back bedroom. The incident caused about $20,000 in structure damage and about $25,000 damage to the home's contents, he said.

Mar. 17--Some might have called it much ado about nothing, but Riverside Fire Authority Chief Jim Walkowski thought otherwise.

"Well, it's not human life, it's feline life, but it's a life," the chief said as he prepared to hoist a ladder 35 feet up a Douglas Fir tree Tuesday in a Centralia backyard a few blocks from the Centralia Factory Outlets.

Mar. 14--Tacoma firefighters battled a fire at a smoke shop in Fife late Saturday afternoon.

Responding firefighters found flames shoot- ing from the side and rear of a mobile home that housed the smoke shop at 1211 Alexander Ave., said Fire Department spokesman Joe Meinecke.

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported at 4:54 p.m.

Firefighters were able to protect a fireworks stand and a house near the side of the smoke shop that burned, Meinecke said.

Mar. 11--LEAVENWORTH -- At first, Bill Horner didn't think the device was a bomb.

It had a metal smoking pipe attached to it "so I thought it looked like somebody had dropped their stash," said Horner, deputy chief of Fire District 3 in Leavenworth.

But upon closer inspection, "I saw the wires, the detonation cord, the cylinder ... and it was like, 'Oh.' "

SPANAWAY, Wash. --

An elderly woman was critically injured in a house fire in Spanaway early Tuesday.

Fire officials said she was unresponsive when firefighters pulled her out of the burning house.

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue told KIRO 7 News that the fire in the 15600 block of Seventh Avenue East was reported just before 3 a.m.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alison Grande said 911 dispatchers received a hang up call from the house at 2:45 a.m.

'Hero' Retired Wash. Firefighter Saves Disabled Woman, Pets From House Fire

CLE ELUM, Wash. --

A retired volunteer firefighter in Cle Elum is being called a hero after he rescued a disabled woman from her burning home and helped pull several of her family's dogs to safety.

The firefighter -- who is himself disabled -- was able to carry the 22-year-old woman and several family pets to safety.
