Worker Killed in Fire at Baltimore Fuel Facility

March 7, 2022
A worker died in a three-alarm fire at Petroleum Management in Baltimore that had fires burning in manholes.

One person is dead after a 3-alarm fire at a fuel facility in Curtis Bay on Monday morning, according to the Baltimore Fire Department.

Four employees were working outside of the Petroleum Management Inc. facility Monday when flames engulfed one of them, said Blair Adams, spokeswoman for the Baltimore Fire Department. The individual’s coworkers attempted to extinguish the blaze, but were unsuccessful, and it spread to the building, Adams said. The employee was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officials at Petroleum Management’s corporate office declined to comment on the fire. According to its website, the company handles spills of petroleum products, and offers environmental monitoring and other services. The facility’s owner did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Firefighters responded to the facility, located in the 5200 block of Curtis Avenue, just before 7 a.m., and found it engulfed in flames and smoke. Fuel was reported in storm drains, according to a tweet from the firefighters’ union. A third alarm was called shortly thereafter, partly because of the large number of flammable products inside.

Firefighters from Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County and BWI Airport Fire & Rescue assisted city firefighters in battling the fire. Just after 8 a.m., the fire was extinguished, Adams said, though firefighters remained on the scene to check for any flare-ups.
