Detroit Firefighters Save Baby Born in Toilet

The 13-year-old mother might not have known she was pregnant before going into labor in the bathroom of her home Monday, according to Detroit authorities.

A newborn baby born in a toilet was rescued by Detroit firefighters Monday.

A 9-1-1 call was made as the 13-year-old mother began going into labor in her bathroom at her home on the city's west side, WJBK-TV reports. It's unclear if the teen knew she was pregnant before going into labor, and she initially had gone to the bathroom in order to relieve herself.

By the time crews arrived at the scene, the teen had given birth. Firefighters were frantically met by the mother's sister at the home, and they worked to calm the situation.

"I assured her we will do everything we can, and she eventually settled down. It was very chaotic," Sgt. Tom Suchora told WJBK.

When first responders arrived, the baby had been wrapped in a blanket and was on the floor, and the mother was unconscious. Initially, the baby's heart rate and breathing couldn't be picked up when they checked for vital signs, and CPR was performed on the newborn and the mom as they were taken to Detroit Children's Hospital of Michigan.

"Upon arrival we found the baby on the floor wrapped in a towel, we began CPR, we checked on the mother, she was unconscious in the bathroom," Sgt. Tom Suchora told WJBK.

The baby was born full-term at 7 pounds and is doing well. The condition of the mother is not known, according to WJBK.

"You just want to do the right thing, so that you get the right results," Firefighter Marcus Moore, of Engine No. 59, told the TV station. "We were fortunate to do that today. It was surprising, the age that she was, I am pretty sure she was scared. But that's why we are here, to take care of those situations."
