Jul. 9 -- CORONADO -- A lifeguard truck ran over a young girl Monday evening in the sand near the north end of the city's beach, the fire chief said. The girl was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, but the severity of her injuries were not immediately known, Coronado Fire Chief Jim Lydon said.

It happened around 6:15 p.m. as the lifeguard truck, a Chevrolet pickup, was doing a routine beach patrol and maneuvering around a berm near an area commonly known as Dog Beach, Lydon said.

As the truck came around the backside of the berm, there was a girl crouched in the sand that the lifeguards did not see, Lydon said. NBC7 reported that she was 4 years old.

The truck went over the top of the girl with both of its tires on the driver's side, Lydon said. The lifeguards inside the pickup "felt it, stopped immediately and rendered first aid," Lydon said over the phone Monday night.

Paramedics were called to the scene and provided medical aid until the girl arrived at the hospital.

"I don't have any details on her injuries," the fire chief said. FOX5 reported the girl was in "good condition," according to a spokesman at the children's hospital.

Lydon said the Coronado Police Department was investigating the incident.
