AL Firefighters Rescue Workers after Floor Collapse

Dec. 27, 2019
Construction workers at a site near the University of Alabama fell 20 to 25 feet in the collapse, and Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue's confined spaces rescue team was called in.

Firefighters rescued five construction workers who fell during a floor collapse at a work site near the University of Alabama campus Thursday.

The workers were on the ground floor level at 811 12th Street near Tutwiler Hall when the collapse occurred around 9 a.m., said Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue Service spokeswoman Holly Whigham.

The floor section collapsed into the three-story basement area, she said, before the workers fell approximately 20-25 feet.

None of the workers were trapped by falling debris, she said. Firefighters entered the collapse area and pulled them to safety before taking them to DCH Regional Medical Center, Whigham said. No one was seriously injured, and all were listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

Multiple units responded, including the department's confined spaces rescue team.
