Houston firefighters helped rescue a woman who was trapped underneath an SUV after an auto-pedestrian collision Wednesday on the wet roads of southwest Houston.

The woman was crossing Fondren Road along Bellaire Boulevard in a crosswalk when the driver of an SUV turning onto Bellaire from Fondren ran over her, police officers on scene said. The woman was crossing the street without permission from the crosswalk control signal, the officers said.

First responders called for a full team of rescue crews to pull her out from underneath the SUVbut the first-arriving firefighters wound up rescuing her using a floor-jack to lift the vehicle. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in an unknown condition, but officers said she is expected to be OK.

Officers questioned the driver, who was released on scene.
