The cross-country skier stayed above water by clinging to bushes as he waited for Sudbury firefighters to sled to his rescue.

SUDBURY – Firefighters rescued a man who fell through the ice while cross-country skiing on Willis Lake Tuesday, authorities said.

The man, whom the Fire Department did not identify, was cross-country skiing when he fell through the lake about 3:36 p.m.

According to a press release, the man called 9-1-1 after he fell through the ice. He held onto some bushes to keep himself above water until help arrived.

Three firefighters, wearing thermal suits, used a sled to go across the water and rescue the man, according to the release. The man was taken to Emerson Hospital in Concord for evaluation.

"This is a great example of our firefighters putting their extensive training to use to help someone in need," Fire Chief John Whalen said.
